NVIDIA Reveals Blackwell Architecture for Advancing the Next Wave of GenAI
NVIDIA recently introduced its latest GPU architecture, Blackwell, intending to revolutionize accelerated computing and facilitate real-time generative AI models with trillion-parameter capacities across various organizations.
Blackwell signifies a significant progression from its predecessor, the Hopper architecture, boasting an impressive decrease of up to 25 times in cost and energy consumption. Named after the esteemed mathematician David Harold Blackwell, this new architecture incorporates six groundbreaking technologies poised to redefine the landscape of AI.
Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s Founder and CEO, expressed confidence in Blackwell’s transformative potential, stating that it will soon drive the new industrial revolution. He emphasized collaborating with leading global companies to leverage AI’s potential across diverse sectors.
Key innovations within Blackwell include the introduction of a chip housing 208 billion transistors, a second-generation Transformer Engine enabling double the compute and model sizes, a fifth-generation NVLink interconnect for enhanced multi-GPU communication speed, and advanced engines ensuring reliability, security, and efficient data processing.
At the heart of Blackwell lies the NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, ingeniously integrating powerful GPUs. This allows the creation of systems like the liquid-cooled GB200 NVL72 platform that can accommodate up to 36 Grace CPUs and 72 Blackwell GPUs, resulting in an impressive 1.4 exaflops of AI performance. NVIDIA has garnered support from the biggest providers of cloud services, such as Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Microsoft Azure, to offer instances powered by Blackwell.
Prominent partners such as Dell Technologies, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and Tesla plan to integrate Blackwell technology into their products, spanning hardware, software, and sovereign clouds. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We have a longstanding partnership with NVIDIA, and we’re thrilled to bring the groundbreaking capabilities of the Blackwell GPU to our Cloud customers and teams across Google to accelerate future discoveries.”
The adoption of Blackwell architecture and its accompanying software stack is expected to drive innovation across various industries, including engineering, chip design, scientific computing, and generative AI.
Mark Zuckerberg, the Founder and CEO of Meta, highlighted the significance of AI in fueling their products and conveyed enthusiasm about utilizing NVIDIA’s Blackwell to elevate their open-source Llama models and advance the next generation of Meta AI and consumer products.
